As stereotypes depict, cosmetic surgery had traditionally been a women’s speciality but in recent years, more and more men are going under the knife in an attempt to feel better about themselves and their appearance. In a world dominated by social media, it’s no surprise to most that more and more people of all ages are starting to turn to cosmetic procedures in order to fix ‘problem areas’ and make themselves feel better and men are certainly jumping on that bandwagon. Here are five cosmetic procedures that are currently popular with men.
Face Lifts
Face lifts are becoming an increasingly accessible procedure, with quick lift procedures even cutting down the amount of downtime needed after any procedure. While popularity is thought to have waned slightly over the past year, it’s still one of the most requested procedures and with minimally and non-invasive procedures improving in quality with each technological advancement that innovates the industry, the concerns around scarring or pain are much lower.
Male Breast Reduction
Excess breast tissue in men is a surprisingly common issue, but one that can leave countless people insecure about how they look. Depending on the cause of the excess breast tissue, this can be fixed in one of a few ways. If it’s due to excess fatty tissue, liposuction could be used to reduce the size with minimal, if any scarring to deal with. For glandular tissue, which is much more firm and dense, it may be necessary to cut it out which could unfortunately cause more of a scar. However, an improvement in technology, knowledge and aftercare of recent years has reduced this considerably, encouraging more and more men to undergo the procedure.
Liposuction
As we mentioned before, liposuction is an option for men with excess fatty tissue, but this isn’t just for the chest area. In fact, with the pressure for a ‘perfect body’ increasing for both men and women, the popularity of this procedure in both genders is growing considerably. Tummy, hips, buttocks, upper arms and neck are some of the most common areas for liposuction and can help contour and shape the body into a much more desirable figure.
Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty, more commonly known as a nose job, is another common procedure amongst men. In 2017, 554 men in the UK alone were reported to have had a nose job, used primarily to reduce or enlarge the nose depending on what the patient feels necessary. For some men, it was also a case of changing the shape or angle to fix any unusual shapes or positioning on their face. The procedure can differ depending on the desired result, but generally these procedures feature small incisions that may or may not scar.
Blepharoplasty
Perhaps the most unexpected and unusual on this list is blepharoplasty – or eyelid reduction. Reduced elasticity in the skin can lead to dropping and excess skin in a variety of places and in the eyelids this can lead to bags under the eyes or ‘folded in’ upper eyelids. However, while this procedure has its benefits in terms of a youthful look, it can also have health benefits, improving the patient’s eyesight. This is another procedure that requires small incisions, but improvements and further knowledge have helped to reduce the level of scarring considerably.
The market for cosmetic surgery for men is just as vast and wide as that for women, but the stigma surrounding these procedures can put a lot of men off of investing in the procedures they may desperately want. Through further publicity and a growing industry, this could change in the future, however, so watch this space!
